About George Washington Hambrice

All of the following information is from family members. Old newspapers, US Census and varied other sources

George Washington Hambrice was born in 1849 in Alabama( not verified) and died in Nevada county Arkansas on 12-29-1912, and was buried at Glenville. He came to the Davidson area around the 1880’s plus or minus. He taught his future wife, Emma S. Bradshaw, in high school and they were married in 1886. He was 21 years older than Emma, she was 16,(born in 1870) and he was 39, (born in 1849).
According to the 1900 US Census, George was born in 1849 in Alabama. The 1900 census shows they had been married 14 years. Emma’s father and mother, (Nathanial Bradshaw and Emmilin J. Sanders) were born in N. Carolina. George was probably listed living in the same area on the 1890 US Census but all the information on that census was destroyed by fire.

About a year after George married Emma he bought the Old Watts Plantation in 1887 app. The house was a two story with 12 rooms and 12 fireplaces. The grounds had hedges of box wood, carefully clipped, long rows of pink crepe myrtles, and white Alethea's, with hydrangeas and oleander in huge tubs and an immense white climbing rose which outgrew its frame and stretched out long fragrant sprays as it welcomed guest.

At that time the community of Davidson was called Old Delta. The house was located back behind the Watts Cemetery by the Davidson church. About two years after GWH bought the plantation the house burnt.(this information conflicts with another newspaper that states the the house was still there in 1906, if you more information on this please let me know.) According to family members he built another house across the road, (location unknown) from the Davidson church. His first son Milton was born in 1887 and may have been born in the Watts house. The remainder of the children were probably born in the new house.

George owned a mercantile store across the road from the church. In the store was the post office and George was the postmaster and Emma delivered the mail

Marjorie Hambrice Beasley says that her father, George Hatley Hambrice the son of George Washington Hambrice, built a house(about 1903 plus or minus) in the yard of the old Watts house for his family. This had to be after the Watts house burnt in 1888 and George Hatley was only 5 years old in 1890.The house that George Hatley built also burnt in latter years and the family was living in the Hubert house until George Hatley's death.
